Many of us are drawn to the moon in ways we cannot really explain. Perhaps every now and then we just stop and admire its presence in the night sky. Perhaps we revel in its cycle, celebrating the full moon with ritual or feast and taking note of the passing of each phase as we explore our magical practice. No matter how much it impacts us on a conscious level, it is still there with its silvery light, stirring the tides and filling the sky with its glow impacting us not only on a personal level but being deeply rooted in the systems and cycles of the whole earth.
Similarly, the moon is often praised, valued, and even worshiped as an aspect of the Goddess, and often viewed as an important piece to the puzzle of one's magical practice. While its influence is sometimes subtle, and sometimes left out of ritual practice within a variety of traditions, its cycle can also be of great value to our spell casting should we reach out and embrace its presence.
The Waxing Moon
The Waxing phase of the moon is that period where the moon grows from a sliver in the sky to a brilliant full orb. Within magical practice, the Waxing phases is traditionally regarded as a phase best suited for positive magic, or magic which will enrich and add to life. Examples of this include the working of a money drawing spell, where the growth of the moon encourages the growth of one's prosperity, or perhaps a love spell seeking to encourage adoration and otherwise help love blossom and grow. This phase is traditionally used to aid in seeking material gain, rather than spiritual.
The Full Moon
Even those who do not practice any sort of magical tradition look to the full moon and tell stories or repeat sayings of how it seems to influence people with its presence. In magical practice, it is embraced as a high time for development, helping to open those who look to it to spiritual growth and other such positive boons, such as the development of intuition, seeking contact with the Goddess or the God, or simple seeking its empowering influence within your spell or ritual. The Full Moon is a highly spiritual phase within the moon's cycle, typically involving all matters ethereal, astral, divine, and of the spirit or soul.
The Waning Moon
The phase during which the Full Moon retreats again to the dark of the New Moon, the Waning moon is a time for "negative" magic, or magic and spells that take away from that which already exists. While this often involves curses and similar such efforts, it is also rather helpful in some forms of healing magic, banishing spells, and similar such magical efforts. In this way, one can help remove negative people from one's life, kick bad habits, or even smoothly end a bad relationship - "negative" magic need not only be cruel curses, but is simply the reduction or removal of various aspects that impact you or others.
The New Moon
The New Moon is the name for the moon's phase when it has gone dark, appearing at most as a slight, sliver of a crescent or the moon's faint glow. Most often, it goes entirely unobserved. In many magical traditions, the New Moon is a time where magical practices are left to rest. It is a time to rejuvenate and recover from your prior spells and magical workings. Within other practices, the New Moon is also a time for wishes, and personal fulfillment. Either way, it is frequently a time associated with cleansing and purification, or preparing of the body, mind, and spirit for the rest of the next cycle to come. It is a time to seek peace, and perhaps work spells of harmony and calm.
